Vasu’s Onam!

This is the version of my last Malayalam Poem.It comprises the anguish of a child who gets bored when he has to use his pal's old clothes even for festivities..

Reached around, the festival Onam,
the Onam-sabbatical children enjoy.
flowers they gather in scattered groups
and ready is ‘Pookkalm’ in front compound.
Vasukuttan dreamt a reverie,
a reverie of wearing a shirt, bought new.
Made he also a ‘pookkalam’ all set
in front of the hut his father built.

Chellan had saved a little for Onam,
cooked Thanka the family’s petite feast.
Vasukuttan ate no food, whining aloud
for this year’s new shirt that father promised last year.
Having some irksome feelings ten-year-old Vasu
leaning to the mud-wall sat and slowly slipped to sleep.
Keep the promise his parents could not;
instead brought they his buddy Ajayan’s garb.

Till now old one he wore with no grumble at all,
but has he currently sure yen for a new wear.
“All his mates roam and rove in new attire,
another’s worn one only our dear one has.”
Father Chellan’s heart bled very badly,
mother Thanka’s mind stiff stifled,
angst choked their feeble chest and
tear-drops rolled and drenched cheeks.

Vasu gradually woke-up from doze,
a rapid reflection stroked his mind.
“Poor my parents can’t buy new clothes;
always they earn money meager.”
“Achcha*, Amma*, worry you need not
‘study I will well for a good job
and I will fetch a lot of riches
and I will stand erect in future.”

Achcha*  -father
Amma8 -mother

വാസുകുട്ടനും ഓണം വന്നു !

This week is festive for Keralites who await the dawn of Onam. So this is a poem on Onam. Next week its English version will be born.

Life, But no Life!

Namita possessed with esteem the post of a probationary officer in a New Gen Bank. Though she had graduated in Engineering she preferred a job in a bank.  As a natural course of life she became a wife and subsequently a mother. The completion of her motherhood-leave pushed her back to the seat in the bank. The hard copy of a memorandum lain with her boss awaited to welcome her. Its read definitely crippled her muscles on her visage and curved more her already curved eyebrows. It boomed out indicating the notice period of sacking her from there stating some baseless reasons. Of course her sincerity and efficiency dissolved all the hitches on her way to another job. But the pre-new-job period had provided her much anguish and anxiety. Leave for a longer period acted as the cutting sword on her job. No softness or work ethics  greeted her to linger to that job.

Why I have mentioned this introduction because no humane ground prevails in human minds in today’s day to day affairs. It is true that the bank dealings run smoothly with the contribution of all employees. But how can they make persons deprived of their personal need? Human values such as empathy, sympathy, clemency, courtesy, respect, regard, obedience, obeisance, patience, tolerance, fortitude, forgiveness etc have place scarce in the social space now a days. They instead vanish from people’s mind figuring out no uses here, regardless of their needs. And if at all they stay back a little bit, they find no time to come to the vanguard of people’s deed. Today’s main predicament is time, time constraint and ‘no time cry’ we hear from every nuke and cranny.

Today many of the youngsters in fact hold good records of academics undeniably. Their work force earns them basket full of cash. Draw they handsome remuneration, live they in mansions with expanse, travel they in expensive motor-mediums and obtain they all devices for comforts. Effusive lavishness of theirs in general has replaced the miserliness of people in spending. In toto they buy luxuries, provide for charities, spend for families and contribute for social needs. They are unquestionably healthy in wealth, though not a great deal in delight. It was not the way the oldsters lived their young life. They didn’t cart bags full of cash wherever they went. In truth they were devoid of cash in abundance. They were but wealthy in health. There are so many other youngsters and oldsters now too finding it difficult to meet both the ends. Disparities hold some on the highest branch of prosperity while a good many have to struggle, yet no reach to riches.

Do we all today have a life full of life or does a single person live an apposite life? A big’ No’ is its response. People may sure boast of joyful days, delightful life etc.etc. But sure they will hide a dark shade somewhere in their life span. They may dream of a hundred plans in their minds of which today’s work load allows them not to fulfill even fifty percent. And that leaves a strip of disappointment in their minds and that strip goes on nagging their costly calm.

Present day’s limited free time allows not one to spend one’s hard-earned money in a fruitful style.  Time troubles people mercilessly by flying away at a supersonic speed. Recreation and amusement have no reception amongst the youngsters now. Social gatherings also turn to be more formal with seldom scope of merriment. Hither-thither when such things pave their paths to human lives, the very vivid villain in the array of mobile phone appears as a spoilsport. This spoilsport snatches from the people their attention and interest at the fullest. The upshot is only physical presence of theirs there without any entertainment.

People have become machines running for hours and hours together ignoring all the tenderness of their life. They get up early, very early turn the key to start their body-vehicle, which takes a few rounds inside the residence and runs to the office campus, attains the position and remains ‘on’ till night. No possibility of witnessing the sweet sunrise and sunset both. No scenes or sceneries attract their attention. In fact they wander or have to wander after reputation, position and remuneration in today’s social climate. If this is continued a time will come when people feel themselves alien to their natural habitat.

Caring the parents, rearing the children well, having fun with all, keeping good rapport with the spouse, proper sleep, reading the books of choice, tidying the residence, keeping appealing dress-sense, eating toothsome food etc have acceptance less in peoples’ lives. It is none of their negligence, but the workload eats away everybody’s time and quite with no concern.

The plight of the offspring of the present is such that the weight they carry back and forth for schooling is inestimable. The little legs running hunchbacked with heavy bags cut a sorry figure in beholders’ eyes. At dawn kids of age one onwards are from bed to toes and the poor are compelled to perform everything in semi-sleep conditions. Six working days and farness from home for eight to ten hours  for the playschool, school and tuition centres literally turn the young generation disinterested in everything. Curriculum becomes a nightmare for many. The persuasion from the parents only ignites seriousness in some of them to obtain better scores in the exams. And that achievement just happens and it is not goal-linked. Dearth of leisure-time, exhaustion of energy and no play for fun etc. fill laziness and dullness in children.

Lack of rest and freedom in both young and grownups leads to fatigue and tension, the result is stress and strain. Sometimes communication ends in a confronting climax.   The elders go to the extent of exercising their stiffness on their innocent brood. They objurgate children for no reason. The brood fall prey to blows and slaps also.

The corporate or business houses pay huge wages to their employees, extracting all their juices. They do not allow the people to take pleasure in living. They if appoint two persons to share one person’s load and salary, they will get their watchwords, productivity and profit climb on board. Then two families will be benefitted, disparity between haves and have-nots will be diminished, exorbitant price-rise will reverse due to reduced salary with people and the society will enjoy facilities much more.

Even the business magnates do not live their life. Amidst lavishness too the thoughts of conquering heights more and more haunt their peace of mind. Always they are engaged in exploring strategies, introducing innovations, planning activities and so on. So they too do not benefit from an exact life’s excitement. What for all these? Reasonable profit and, gradual expansion, tolerable duty-amount will create a hindrance-free atmosphere in duty spot. That will bring forth vigour and vibrant situation in the work conditions. The outcome is more profit.

One day all will have to bid adieu from here for the Godly abode above.   Only one life, let people live that without much hitches. And thus today’s world order can be remodelled. The governments Globe wide should think in the line of letting the citizens lead a life full of life.

Lilies-of- the- Valley.!

lilies-of-the-valley
stuck to the mountainside
like ribbons

Charm the viewers with cuteness;
Harm them,they with  their venom.

I have penned a few lines as haiku on Lilies-of-the-valley.

Celebrate friendship,
Lily of the valley and
Fairy of the green.

To keep the bond, ties
Lily, on Fairy's hand, a
 Band; they laugh in joy.

 Visits Fairy her
Friend, Lily. Dance in valley
Lily and Fairy.

Spray in spring sweet scent
Lilies-of-the-valley  for
Her friends everywhere.

Lilly bears perfumed
Blooms;  Spring with warmth in heart and
Smile on lips greets her.

The bouquet of sweet
Fragrance Lily offers Spring
While shaking the hands.

Classy Snapshots!

Come across, we in our lives

                                                   articles with varieties and patterns;

for us the Great Creator has built

in abundance in this wonderful world.

Get imprinted in our mind’s screen

                                                 as snapshots of cute classiness,

the stuff that plunge into our attention

through the two parts of our vision.

Possess we a mind, specially designed,

to absorb God’s fine arts’ elegance

that abound in the regions seen around

and save them in our folder of memory.

                                              With colours nix, memory-brushes portray

                                               seldom our scenes-packed bright minds

in our destined canvas of imagination

and display them later in outside podium.

Pour, some of us our full views and sights

that get embedded in the recall pane,

to the painting brush placed in hand and

a painting shaded in rainbow-hues, is born.

The paintings turn into photographs salient

That speak silently the meanings in volumes

                                             Magnetizing the beholder’s mind

Giving in fact a mesmerizing effect.

Stops, the prettiness of pictures a while,

The passers-by on their way to target

And they sight in them the soul and spirit

Feel really the bliss of peace and pleasure.

Beauty in Sky!

(I haven't taken it as the peace for ever.)

Cotton bundles in
Sky, spell of beauty in eye
Mind clicks the figure .

Mesmerizing scene
Allows not mind to away go.
This is Ecstasy.

Unties who the fine
Bundle and scatters cotton
here-there? Still pretty.

Feel like lying there
And roll on cotton  sprinkled;
Rest in comfy way.

Shradhha!

(Somehow I managed to post this.I was so engaged that I was not able to write or read anything. I'll read  all the works that I regularly do.A short story, the English version of  my Malayalam story.)

“I know you all are eagerly awaiting the results of the literary contests conducted in connection with ‘Mother’s Day’. Here are the results," the Malayalam teacher’s voice very cogent entered the pairs of ears in attendance there.

"The third prize goes to……."
"The second prize is bracketed by two children. They are……"
“And now let’s us see who the first position-holder is. The first prize is bagged by none other than ‘Shraddha, Shraddha of Xll grade, B section. Congratulations, the winners. All of you give them a big hand.”

Shraddha could not believe her ears and so she pinched her hand to prove she was not dreaming. She never thought her article would fetch her any accolade and that too the foremost one. The topic ‘My Mother’ stimulated her interest in participating. And hence she took out the pen and according to her scribbled something on the foolscap sheets provided for the extempore.

The winners all received the accolades from the chief guest’s spouse. Thunderous acclaims resonated in the hall. Shraddha,a girl with humility a lot stooped down and touched the feet of the Chief Guest before receiving the prize.

“With the permission of the chief guest Shraddha will read her article here as an encouragement to others."
In response to the teacher’s remark Shraddha proceeds to reading her article.

“Esteemed elders and my endearing friends,
Writing an article was never in my mind till I heard this topic ‘My Mother’. Actually I didn’t know how to start and what to write. So I chose to write something on my own mother. Here it goes….”

‘My Mother’

‘There is none in this whole world tantamount to my mother, who I very dearly call Amma. Or at least I love to believe so. My Amma delightfully adorns me with a very meaningful name Shraddha. Shraddha senses care, concentration, focus and so on. I think I haven’t spoiled my name’s essence.

When the clock rings the rouse-call at five, my mother’s eyes pull apart their shutters and her legs seek the cuisine-corner. Then a wonderful folk dance takes place in the kitchen. Amma, oven, vessels, vegetables, cutlery, crockery, grocery etc enter into a hullabaloo. And by eight her cookery-show is ready on the table that spreads around the fine odour of idly, dosa, coffee, tea and lunch packet for father and me or whatever is required.

If I search for things in the reminiscences shelved in my mind’s corner-chest, those from the age of four are somewhat apparently visible. Whenever I fall prey to even a small common cold, she is the mother whose eyelids refuse to cover the eye-balls. Whenever I lie lazy on bed at study hours, she is the mother who permits me to do that for a little while even now also. This act of hers holds me stand on foot from bed. Whenever I move back and forth on swing, she is the mother who stands behind me without a wink. Whenever I try to pluck flowers, she is the mother who fills my hand with a bunch. Whenever I run after butterflies, she is the  mother who averts me from hurting them. “Mole,if somebody hurts you, won’t it be painful? So we should never hurt any beings,” Amma’s. advice.

By seeing the mother and child affection in us, the Nature even rejoices with me during my play hours. She strokes me tenderly and fans me fondly with her wind-hand. Her sons, the Trees pamper me softly rubbing with leaves on my cheeks. Her daughters, the Flowers gently touch me and smile in glee. Birds sing rhythmic jingles and bees hum melodious tunes for me.
Though my Amma’s education had met its conclusion by tenth grade, her signature is felt in all the aspects of my day to day life. In selecting the apparel and footwear of my preference, in cooking food and snacks of my option and in selecting subjects of my choice in 11th grade and in such-such matters she had her footing.

Nowhere is she a hard taskmaster, though she keeps fixity in resolutions. Always my welfare is her priority. She is an affectionate guide, a modest advisor and a leader full of meekness.

Might be her might mixed with meekness the reason for my being an offspring with reason in handling hitches. If I go on portraying her here, this paper won’t be sufficient to show all her features in detail. You may ask me, “Is your mother that just and right?” Yes, I will tell you, “Ayes are always the answers for that.”

She is a perfect person without flaws and faults. She has mastered the art of child-rearing and spouse-caring. It is a Universal truth that none and nothing we can find in this world without a shady facet. Yes, she may not be exclusion, but the values and virtues that merge in her character are vast enough to conceal her dirty deeds if she has any.

An interrogation may appear,as I have cited nothing about my Achchan(father) here. Of course I shouldn’t be constrained in bringing him to the forefront. That part I will touch later.

What I have highlighted above is nothing but things of my cravings Iisted by me in my dreams in succession.

After I completed the age of eight my Amma was not at all what I narrated here now. She was not ready to lend a hand to heed to my needs. She sought her ease away from Achchan), Ammoomma(granny)and me. The poor eight-year-old noticed something fishy in the situation prevalent at home.

“Amma, don’t go, don’t go,” I don’t know how and why I was crying holding my Amma’s both the legs with my both the hands. At times the eight-year-old troubled her Ammoomma rather went adamant to see and be with her Amma.

“Mole, look at the sky. See the bright star winking at you. That is your Amma,” Ammoomma was fondling me. When all the seasons rotated four times, Ammoomma joined Amma in the sky.

Rainy days doubled my little mind’s distress, for l thought, “Amma is bed-ridden due to fever. That is why she isn’t seen.” And I prayed, “O! God, be with my Amma. High fever only took her away from me. Don’t take her away from the sky also.”

From the age of eight to this eighteen I devote some time to watch my Amma in the sky, I know the sooth though. I wear my Amma’s sari and look into the mirror, “Was she like me?” I remember her but can’t make it sure if she was like me. The very reminiscence of hers sometimes conquers my mind casting the shadow of glum over it.

So whatever reveries I recounted here are all a reality or my much loved Achchan shapes them into reality. He spares none an occasion that provides me pleasure. No matter what my Amma could do, my Achchan does it a degree ahead for me. So now say, “Who is now my mother? Isn’t it my Achchan?”

Yes, my Achchan is my Amma and my Achchan too.’

“Thank you all for lending me a patient hearing.”
