Two Friends!

Varija, the only daughter of her parents, whose presence was a cheer to the world, surrounded her. The obedient, hardworking girl always won the hearts of her teachers, proving excellence in academics. She and her friend, Meghna used walking to the school, which fell at a close distance. Comparison of marks, mode and module of teachers, school ambience, its green velvety cuteness, etc. had their space on the friends’ tongues. The tree pals giving company to them in the break shaded them from the son's ire.

On a Tuesday, the phone call from the school, Varija’s mom, Vanaja attended, “Why was Varija absent for long? Not well?”

“Ma’am, you are mistaken. She comes to school every day. The usual time she is back home also.”

“Then please come to the school,” the teacher said.

The same forte happened with Meghna also.

The next day, the parents and their daughters were in the principal’s room at the scheduled time. The principal and the class teachers understood that the girls started from home, but their route was not to the school. Questions on parks, theatre, friends’ domiciles, restaurants and so on moved from mouth to mouth and loomed in vain. The girls were grieving without uttering anything. Their eyes said a saga of fret, while mouths were kept in a silent mode.

The school staff left the place, leaving the children with their mothers for personal counselling. Affectionate, tolerant and rebuking words in various tones and doting strokes did not affect them. They had stitched their mouths with silence. Eventually, Vanaja played her trump card, bidding goodbye to her daughter; she said she would be going yonder, not wanting to stay with her daughter anymore. And that act did bear its fruits that the already dejected girl narrated everything.

“ Meghna’s Neighbour-uncle guided Meghna to a hotel, showering her with sweet inspiring-type words and glittering covert gifts. He presented her before some vultures and photographed the scenes in the hotel. Using those scenes, he blackmailed and threatened the poor girl for trapping her friend, and Varija fell prey to that conspiracy. What they were doing was in a room in the hotel they had to change their uniforms into pretty apparel and in the evening they did vice-versa. Now, Varija had to bring another girl; the game would earn him a handsome revenue.

The picture was unsubtle; information was passed on to the Police, and they did not delay to handcuff the culprits. Their fathers' transfer requests were addressed positively. Erasing all long-lasting impressions, the girls, now grownups paint flying colours around.

The Son’s Birth!

Why was Vasundhara alone? No, she had a sincere domestic help home.  She picked a time van and journeyed in the time-line to reach thirty years back. Her husband Vasudev was in fact a lovable man, the couple met their needs with a scanty income. They in the desire of a boy, had parented three girls one after another.

Vasudev, a lower grade clerk in a government office, came back home as a cadaver on a scooter accident. Vasundhara’s mind attained utter darkness, because a question mark hung above her life as Damocles’ sword.

Oh! She recognized the growth of the fourth baby in her womb. Despite the advice from her parents and in-laws, for abortion, she rejoiced at her baby’s soft face.

Now looking at the three innocent babies between three years and seven, and her neonatal son, her conscience woke up to the post of a domestic help. She hadn’t revealed to others what her job was.

The Time turned its leaves of seasons, Vasundhara’s burden became weighty. The elder daughter got into a four-year Nursing degree course and her sisters followed it. Children’s education period was indeed a chaos for their mother, though bank-loans acted as wings. The daughters and son had really learned the barriers, their mother had to leap over, therefore, no negligence was marked from their side.

The girls are abroad now after the wedding. The son is now in a gazetted position in Mumbai. Each gain she considered as a tribute to her dear husband, who at the age of thirty six deserted her. She rowed in hardships, but successfully reached ashore.

Old age had sent her parents and in-laws to their final abode. Happy though, of late, her mind enters into unwanted apprehensions.  Her son never heeded to his Amma’s* request for finding a girl.  It remained as a headache for Vasundhara.

She was reading the newspaper sitting in the parlour of her dwelling, a news struck her mind- the supreme Court has squashed the writ petition filed by a group of gays for legal acceptance of gay-wedding.

Vasundhara shuddered at one word, she read it once more, her son’s name among the petitioners. She can in no way accept lesbians and gays, then how their nuptial union!

Table-key!

Shyla was heading to her office. Then, she remembered that she had not taken the key to her table in the office. So, the female turned the course of her action home. When she reached her gate, which she had shut well, it was openAs the time for analyzing was scanty, she entered the sitting room, which remained closed and unbolted. She entered her bedroom, and the scene she witnessed was shocking. Baffled, she was for a moment and suddenly gained strength. She took the phone from the bag and dialled, “Principal speaking, what can I do for you?"

Shyla turned mad, and the words squirted out of her mouth carried rudeness to the top, Is this the way a responsible institute should be?”

“Sorry, what happened, Ma'am?"

“Where is my son, Atul?”

“He may be home,” the principal, on becoming convinced of his absence from the class.

Shyla, on her two-wheeler, had dropped her dear son in the Kinder Garten School before beginning her routine for the office. The naughty little one furtively ran off from the school and reached home. As the maid was busy interacting with the cloth washing stone, he quietly opened the door to enter the kitchen to have the chocolate container. He pulled a chair from the dining to serve his purpose.

Hiding underneath the cot in the bedroom, gaily he ate them. By the time Shyla returned home, he had stripped off ten or twelve chocolates, which found their way to his little gullet.

The school authorities panicked, and one teacher and a caretaker arrived there in apology, " We have a good gatekeeper. We cannot understand how he leapt out and escaped.”

“How can you say like that? Are you a responsible school?”

” We regret, Madam, it is our fault. Apology."

Shyla was not ready to forgive them. She owed the ire of the child's incident, and moreover, she had to proceed to at least a half a day's leave. So, she went on spurting rebuking words, heading no attention to what the school people said. After unloading a load of sickening words, Shyla’s ire got a little watered down. She questioned the little one affectionately to get convinced about the indifference of the school authorities, with a mind to upload more irksome language.

To her dismay, he said,” Amma*, you held Karun’s hand only, not mine. You went inside. I came home.”

The Grandfather and Grandmother!

( The English version of the last Malayalam story.)

Sreedhar Naidu was a jovial manager of a company in Hyderabad and Alok and Supriya are his subordinate colleagues.

“Supriya will be a good partner for you. I think she has s..om..e.th..ing in her mind......” Sreedhar Naidu makes friends with people fast.

“Not yet thought of a marriage, I am only twenty-six now.” Alok.

“Aha! the right age only. Once you talk to her and…., O! Here comes she. I shall call her this side, Supriyaa… Supriyaa….” Naidu.

“Called me? I am going home. It is already seven.” Supriya.

“You are new here. So, be friendly with the people around you. You chat with each other, I am coming.”

“Where are you from?”  Alok.

“Bhopal,” Supriya.

“Staying in a hostel, here in Hyderabad?” Alok

“No, in a flat with a few ladies from our company.” Supriya.

After quieting himself for a while, Alok, “See, we are grown-ups now. I shall tell you frankly.

Mr Naidu brought a proposal for me. Um….you are the girl.”

“………………..”

“But you are not my choice.”

“Insulting me, after calling here? Why do you think I am not your choice? Am I not good looking, not well-educated, not well-employed? I think I am all those.”

“Yes, you are pretty, well-educated, well-employed. That is not a problem. My parents are no more, brought up with difficulty by grandparents. I studied well and am now well-employed. They know only Malayalam. I want a girl, who can communicate with my grandparents.”

“O, that counts a lot, then listen, I belong to Kochi. My parents settled in Bhopal. Ours is a traditional type of family. So, my father wanted us to learn Malayalam; we, the siblings write, read and speak our language,” Supriya, who communicated till then with Alok, only in English, spoke in good Malayalam, bearing a grin on her visage.

Toys of his Choice!

“Oh! It is already 11 o’ clock, Chettan(her husband) will come for lunch,” Madhumati hurried to prepare the food for lunch. It was a Sunday, so her mind had entered into a holiday mood, carrying out her routines in a slow pace. When she looked for vegetables, she found the lack of green chillies.  Along with her five-year-old son, Ashik, she set out to a nearby vegetable vendor’s shop, which sold vegetables of all kinds.  On the way the kid watched a red toy-car lying in an almirah of a shop. The child demanded his mama to buy him that toy. She was reluctant to buy, as she hadn’t had any added money with her at that time.

His papa, Govind and Mama, Madhumati had been managing to acquire toys aplenty for the VIP of their tiny haven, in spite of their scanty income. At times the dearth of revenue made them postpone certain demands of their little son. Even then, they tried their best to make their dear darling gleeful.

The little one was snivelling and snivelling on the way over the toy. He didn’t stop to play with his mates, his favorite rose blooms, didn’t look at his pals, the squirrels practising tree-climbing and didn’t heed attention to his pet, Kutty the kitten rushing to rub its face on him. At home, he sat away from everything, even from his mama to express his protest.

That day, unlike the other days, Govind, arrived at home around5 o’ clock. He, being an auto rickshaw driver could get to his domicile at about 8 pm only. Ashik took a rapid leap to his papa, but his papa advanced to the bed giving him a feeble smile. Papa, who was very keen in executing his son’s demand, was tired and expressed the indication of a discomfort. The child’s depth of enthusiasm diminished a bit observing his papa’s exhaustion. So he kept himself a little away from him. But his papa agreed to buy it, the next day. On inquiry, Madhumati realized that Govind was not well, as he suffered a sort of nausea and a pain on his temple and it was unusual for him.

Without wasting much time she took him to the nearby hospital where he had to be admitted. A series of tests like scanning, blood analysis, urine culture, E.C.G test, and the like were administered. The dearth of revenue was compensated by his friends. Finally found that it was the attack of a horrifying viral fever called Nipah. Nipah is an unwanted guest started paying visits in numerous North Kerala families and it is successful in resisting all kinds of medication so far. It is highly contagious also.

When Govind was diagnosed as infected, he was taken to an isolated room. His dear and near, though wanted to know his knowhow’s, were denied permission. Madhumati, who very much wanted to be by his side and heed service, also was not allowed to go near.

Ashik’s toy didn’t sink into forgetful water-basin, as its thought time and again approached him, “I want to see papa. He will take me to the shop. He will buy me the toy,” the tiny continued whining to his mama. No words of solace from her settled him. When she touched the foot of her patience, under duress she had to use her right hand on his thigh. His groaning sound amplified a tad and gradually got into a mute state.

Madhumati and Ashik had to reluctantly return home.  The kinfolk who were surrounding them slowly withdrew their appendages from the proximity of the hospital on account of the fear of fatality.

“We cannot blame them because they might be thinking of their own life,” she spoke to herself, “And standing here long is a risk.”

Anguish and anxiety occupied the platform of her sleep. Her mind sank into redundant thoughts. The poor kid after bewailing for long fell into a sleep slowly. Madhmati’s parents, who were ready to make their ingress into her residence, were advised not to.

Next day Govind’s healthiness showed a little brightness, but things didn’t last long, as on the third-day things got worse. Madhumat’s mind was with her better-half and God, all the time. She was not in a good frame of mind to cook or eat. As her darling suddenly loomed in her mind, she prepared something to answer his thirst and hunger. Madhumati performed her routine duties just as a machine, as her mind fully was with her hubby, who was all alone from the relatives. She surpassed the time with heaviness in heart and distress in mind, because a premonition of an ill fate haunted her.

Two days passed without any pluses in his fitness. His condition was deteriorating instead.  God seemed to be blind towards Mathumati’s plea.  And finally, as Madhumati’s sixth sense hinted, the news opposite to what she wanted to hear, hit her ear. He bade goodbye to all and eventually, his soul sought the exosphere. Madhumati felt that her right hand was chopped off. She couldn’t cry because the depth of agony turned her anesthetized.

Madhumati, Ashik and other dear ones were not allowed to view the body, because the ferocious viruses would communicate themselves from person to person with immediacy. Ashik didn’t comprehend anything; he went on with his act of bewailing for kissing his dear papa.
“I want to kiss…u...u...u...u papa, take me, u...u...u, take me...e…e...e...e, I want to kiss you, papaaaaa, now I want to come to you. …papa.aaa.,” the five-year-old Ashik was continuously troubling his grandpa, who was profoundly shedding tears.

The officials made the arrangements for the cremation of the cadaver. It was in fact burnt into ashes by taking all kinds of precautions. The nurse, who was rendering her service to Govind, approached Madhumati and spoke something in consolation. After a while, she opened his voice message in her phone.

It spoke in a puny tired tone, “Madhu, when… you... get... the …. Insurance... money, buy ….our darling the toys of his…. C...h...o…i….”

Her Better Half!

(A mini story)

As she crossed the brink of her wedlock, the flight of her hope took her amidst the brightness of the stars.   With milk in hand and mirth on lips noiselessly she stepped into the conjugal room. She took a few moments to realize that she was not dreaming because the room was highly decorated as if it was an exhibition hall.  The nuptial bed was adorned with an ornate sheet which seemed identical to a garden of multi-coloured blooms. Moreover, flowers fresh from the garden were sprinkled on the sheet and that made it difficult to differentiate the design from the real flowers. Ranjini though favoured not much snobbishness, somehow developed a fascination towards the decorations in that room.

Her better half had already established the ownership of his space on the bed.He was lying near the wall turning towards it.

She sat on the bed,” Milk.”

He didn’t heed attention or pretended so. Ranjini slightly raised her voice,” Milk.”  He turned straight a little and lay facing the ceiling.

“Please drink a better half of the milk and give me the other half, “ Ranjini’s sound had captured a little anxiety in that.

“…….,”Parthip.

“Amma told me to give the milk to you.,” Ranjini with a tint of sobbing in her voice.

“…….”Parthip.

“It is the custom, half you will have and the other half for me.”

“What custom? Don’t pretend. You are not that simple. I know you have a boyfriend. Together you were on beach, theatres and..  um….I don’t tell much,” his voice had attained more decibels in volume.

An unforeseen thud hit her head and she slipped and directly fell into the abyss.  Such an awful blow, she couldn’t think of.

Ranjini’s sound was reluctant to come out; it held tightly to her throat. Her eyes instead started speaking by letting surge her tears in abundance. Her mind went on persuading her to pour her thoughts out through the throat.

Thinking, come what may she said,” How can you say so? Can you tell me the name? Who told you like that? A series of interrogations spurted out of her lingual part.

“Then why didn’t you withdraw? What for all these luxuries? You could turn back from this exercise,”  she said.

“Having a boyfriend is not a big thing. No male will marry a flirting girt. I am not of that sort.My parents are very strict and I was fully in my studies.” continued she.

“I came to know the things yesterday only. I didn’t want to put up a show at this eleventh hour in front of all.”

“Okay, impossible to live with you, I’ll call my parents .I’ll go now itself,” she took a right turn and stepped towards the door.

A strong arm encircled her and another arm snatched the milk spilling it on the floor. Before understanding what had happened, she was in the close clutches of his arms.

“You know I am a cine-actor. How was my performance?” holding her more tightly.

 Love from Soul!

Vidarbha’s princess Rukmini, King Bhishmaka’s daughter wanted to wed Sreekrishna, the doorsill of all appeals and abode of all goodness. Her brother Rukmi in odium about Krishna chose Shishupal for her.
She felt it a bolt from the blue.  Assimilate that she couldn’t. Rukmin’s heart ached. Sleep deserted her. Stomach turned away from food. Smile waned from lips. Uneasiness haunted her.
“If I want to change the world around me, I should write to Krishna. I’ll initiate myself for that,” her mind whispered.
Her letter a trustworthy Brahmin took to Krishna. The Most Benevolent Lord rose to the occasion.

I,Me and Myself

To God!
My mind remains with*1 Amma and *2 Ammoomma. Both are in the sky.
None wanted me in the house. Step-mother battered me horridly. *3 Achchan took her side.
Every day I searched in the sky for them.
One day I wrote to God about my difficulties.  I went to post it myself.
Then the post-uncle came there for collecting letters.
He read my card.  He changed God’s address and sent it to court.
The court sent me to this foster-home. Now I am happy here. I have loving mothers and many friends to go to school. I read in third.

It does feel like Home, doesn't it?

(google)

Vivek’s heart ached, mind sobbed and quiet reigned there.   *Achchan's absence  disfigured the domicile's calm. Achchan lived for Vivek, Vivek only after his mother’s final departure. Vivek lay beside Achchan for slumber till teen. He sat sad.

Achchan disproved son’s stance whenever son rebuked his mischievous toddler. Once in rage at the spur of a moment words ‘You don’t interfere, I know to rear my child’ leapt out of Vivek’s lips ruthlessly hitting right at Achchan’s heart.

Revivifying himself he groped around seeking media assistance also to find him.
Eventually a stranger’s phone-call, “A man…………….”

Yes, the house now does seem home, doesn't it?

She realized that she could no longer hide the Truth!

When I sat to expand the topic in hundred words, two buds loomed on the stalk of  my thought process. I didn’t nip any and allowed both to unfurl here.

1        Friendship in Facebook!

That pleasant handsome countenance in facebook, with a forte, bearing a grin below the well-formed moustache, infringed upon Sangeeta's mind. Her curiosity surf-rode through comradeship, but reached no shore of acquaintance.

But that visage journeyed in her sleep and rouse, work and free-time, leisure and pleasure and everywhere. So she unfolded her heart and Raju reciprocated. Their love pining grew in size.

She couldn’t help divulging the truth. Fret-ridden and tear-jerking way she, “I am dumb, forget me, sorry.” She shut her laptop.

After a while with a heavy-heart she signed into facebook.
“We, dumb both, will row on the life-ocean together,” he.

2           Blood and Blood!

The conch trumpet echoed in air.She was in deep thought and walked frontward and backward. Her steps disclose the glumness of her ‘self’.

“ My own blood and my own blood will fight. Oh! How painful. I can’t bear this,” despondingly she thought. “I can’t hide the truth anymore,” she whispered.

She took feeble paces towards him. Her heart-pounding was audible. “You are my dear son, Karna; you and Arjuna are siblings.”Kunti.
“Me, a charioteer’s son, Arjuna’s brother?”

She exposed the truth.
“I will target only Arjuna, no other Pandava; then also you will have five sons.”Karna vanished.

Quite Quietly!

Rani cat’s relentless hunger made her rummage hither-thither, nothing in Kitchen or dining.  Shantini cared and caressed her pet-cat very dearly.
In her absence, Shantini’s domestic help fed the cat, but not in time.

Rani’s desire for food led her to the neighbor’s kitchen. “Aha! Hap; fish-curry reclines in a  ware here, relishing odour."
Her eyes bulged and nostrils expanded of fish- savour, “Thank God, I can easily lick as much I want through this gap.”
Quite quietly she cat-walked and inserted her lingual-part, shutting the eyes. The house-mistress with a log in hand, BANG! O! Poor hungry Rani on running-toes.

The Greatest Love of All!

The hunter’s arrow hit right at the male of the Krauncha birds, when the pair was in courtship.  Ha! The agony demonstrated by the love was inexplicable.

Being fully conscious of an equal fate, she didn't deviate an inch from her lover’s precinct. She clobbered about her beak, flapped wings and flurried in heart-deep anguish. She swaggered around her beloved’s body on the ground, gasping for breath.

She didn’t perceive the presence of the sage or hunter. The dismally engrossed female fainted and fell down sensing her lover’s last breath. Sage Valmik's unfathomable anguish here gave birth to the great Epic Ramayana.

The Pretty old Abode!

Amma told rather pleaded," Ramkrishnan, you buy that house, the owner is about to put it for sale."

“What is the use, amma. It is pretty old, why do you keep all these sentiments?” laughed the son at her demand.

“That house witnessed my kids’ babyhood-your sister’s and yours.”
We had our unforgettable events of life there only.”

Easwary, her husband and two darlings had their two and a half decades of existence in that dear-to-heart dwelling.

The outlay of two bright offspring’s academics had positioned the house in their affluent neighbour’s hands, with reluctance much. Amma’s eyes became tear-filled and mind sauntered through each and every nook and cranny of that house. She couldn't convince her son the value of that abode which his late father had built bit by bit with intricacy.

“Ha! He represents the new gen of the day,” a deep sigh bounded from the mother

How do I Tell her about You!

“What sin have I committed to be here? Jumping into flames or gulping venom is painless. This task, O! How hapless I am. Poor ‘Bhabhi’*!”  How do I tell her about you, ‘Bhaiyya’*” Lakshmana’s heart was heavy, mind was lamenting.  He wept foiling the tear-flow.
Sitadevi unaware of the ill-fate waiting, exultantly journeyed for her refreshing visit to the forest-ashram.

He had to unseal his bunged lips,“Bhaiyya, Srirama sensed people’s displeasure on welcoming you, after He released you from Ravana’s captivity.  He chose to send you to Valiki’s   hermitage.”
Pathos crammed the vicinity breaking Sitadevi’s heart.

She had the Last Laugh!

Sharan, a fifteen-year-old sat sad by the side of his mother. Her face reflected her twinge.

“Surgery though in public-hospital  incurs some outlay.”   Sharan’s mind travelled hither-thither for pecuniary aid.

Nothing turned fruitful.  Eventually the surgery had its turn. Mother had the last laugh. But Sharan shunned interrogations about expenses.

“A robber took birth in me for the instantaneous requirement for mother’s well-being. I picked that cash from your house.” Sharan to neighbour.

“I took a part-time job with studies. I went for a loan.

Please accept this amount. Again steal I’ll never.”

Admiration was the neighbour’s reaction.

A Blessing in Disguise!

How long can an adolescent boy confine himself inside? Gopal’s limbs sauntered around. One day his frequent visitor convulsion violently threw his physique to drains over-flooded with rains.

All the medical aids failed. When the carcass arrived there, his beloved mother’s colossal grief made her collapse. No word could stop her angst.

Days brought calm. Balmy air slowly blew in. Her inner man brought her attention to the other offspring and her grieving spouse.

“The incurable disease has seized our darling. Ha! He has attained the painless world,” sighed she, consoling others and herself.

Is it a ‘Blessing in Disguise’?

So, you think you know it all!

I stood without Maths homework.  My silence kept her in ire.Madam sent me out of the class.

A ninth grade ‘Didi’ pitied me.
  “I didn’t do Maths H.W. I don’t like copying”, responded with mopes.

One month’s   legitimate effort during lunch break from that true heart of 'Didi' drew this seventh grade girl to the forefront. I became a top scorer.
‘ Didi ’ knew what I lacked. Madam didn’t understand where I lacked.

“My castigation boosted you, didn't it?”, Madam.
 I satisfied her.

I Knew It was my Last day There!

I knew it was my last day there. The initial stage on-wards I stayed there. Utmost comfy care I enjoyed with luxury and lavishness.
A feel of angst conquered all faces, when I was admitted in the hospital. My state of mind I couldn’t judge, it was full with mixed feelings. Did a flash of pleasure loom in my mind? The first snivel of my neo-natal infant! Ha!  Immediately a wry smile lurked in me.
I bestowed the tender one caringly in their hands. Paining tears and sobs died within me.
